The USDA FS Sawmill Creek Campground is a recently renovated recreational facility with camping, picnicking, hiking, and bird and wildlife viewing opportunities nearby. It is 1.5 miles up Blue Lake Road, accessible by vehicles from May 15 to November 1 or accessible by foot, cross-country skis, or bikes year-round. The campground has 3 single tent sites and 1 group site with a 30-person capacity. There are also picnic tables, fire rings, and a vault toilet. Two sites can accommodate small RVs, but hookups are not available. A large covered shelter is available for day use and can be reserved by contacting the Sitka Ranger District up to 6 months in advance. The day use fee is $25 and the shelter is first-come first-serve when not reserved. The campground currently has no camping fee, but firewood may be purchased on site during the summer season. There is a campground host when possible and a 14-day overnight stay limit per calendar year that is monitored and enforced year-round. It is also advised that visitors bring their own potable water or to treat water collected from Sawmill Creek. Bear safety is crucial as brown bears can be present any time; please use the bear-proof lockers provided on site. The trailhead for Beaver Lake/Herring Cove Trail is accessible from the campground.
Sealing Cove RV Park is operated by the City and Borough of Sitka is adjacent to Sealing Cove Boat Harbor, 7 miles south of the ferry terminal, and a short distance from downtown Sitka. Space available for 26 RV’s. Water and electrical hook-ups. $37.10 including tax per night. Open May 1 to October 1. For information, contact the Sitka Harbor Master’s office.
Sitka Sportsman’s Association RV Park & Camping Site is adjacent to the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry terminal at 5211 Halibut Point Road, located approximately 7 miles from downtown. There is space for 16 RV’s and tent sites are also available. Water and electrical hookups, showers and restrooms. Open year round. There is also an Indoor Shooting Range, a Trap and Skeet Range, and an Archery Range available.
Starrigavan is a multi-recreational complex offering camping, picnicking, hiking, bird and wildlife viewing opportunities, with freshwater and saltwater fishing nearby. Located 7 miles north of downtown at the end of Halibut Point Road, 3/4 mile from the Alaska Marine Highway Sitka Ferry Terminal, Starrigavan includes a lovely estuary and features a wide range of recreation facilities including camping and picnic sites with bear-proof containers, an artesian well, the Estuary Life Trail, Forest and Muskeg trail, and the Mosquito Cove trail. It is ADA accessible and open year-round (vehicle access restrictions September 16-April 30 in the campground area). There are 34 primitive campsites located in 3 loops and the Starrigavan Creek Cabin that sleeps up to 8 people. There is firewood for sale. Located about 20 miles South of Sitka operated by the City and Borough of Sitka is available for public use. It is accessible year-round by boat. Cabin reservations can be made in person at the City and Borough of Sitka’s Public Works Office (Mon.-Fri. 8am-4pm), 100 Lincoln Street, Room 201, Sitka, Alaska. Situated on the outer coast of the Gulf of Alaska, the Sitka Ranger District encompasses Baranof Island and part of Chichagof Island. The road system provides access to numerous miles of hiking trails, while access to the outer coast provides great opportunities for backcountry hiking, camping, dry cabins, whale watching and fishing. The Mount Edgecumbe Volcanic Field is another unique feature found on this district.
Recreational vehicles with holding tanks may dump free of charge at the municipal wastewater treatment disposal facility.
