Cycle Sitka: Your Guide to Pedaling Smart

Experience Sitka’s breathtaking scenery on two wheels! As Alaska’s first bike-friendly community, Sitka offers an incredible network of paths and trails perfect for every kind of rider. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just looking for a leisurely ride, understanding how to navigate our beautiful island responsibly will make your adventure unforgettable.

Biking Etiquette & Safety

Sitka’s roads and trails are shared by everyone – bikers, pedestrians, and vehicles. Your safety and the safety of others depend on following a few key guidelines:

Share The Trail

All trails and paths open to bikes in Sitka are shared with pedestrians and occasional vehicular traffic. Always be courteous and aware of those around you.

Yield to Others

When encountering pedestrians, slow down or even stop to ensure their safety. This is not just a courtesy, it’s the law in Alaska. Yielding means slowing down significantly and being prepared to stop, allowing pedestrians to proceed first without having to alter their path or speed. Always maintain a safe distance and, if there’s any doubt, remember the pedestrian has the right-of-way.

Ride Predictably

Ride on the right side of the road, single-file, and always with the flow of traffic. Use clear hand signals to indicate your intentions and be mindful of traffic signals.

Downtown Rules

While exploring downtown Sitka, please note that riding bikes on sidewalks is prohibited. If sidewalks are crowded, it’s considerate practice to walk your bike.

Gear Up

Always wear appropriate gear, including a helmet, and stay aware of your surroundings.

Bear Awareness

Sitka is home to a thriving bear population, and they enjoy the same wilderness areas that bikers do. Bears are present year-round, with activity highest between spring and fall. If you find yourself in a bear encounter:

  • Do Not Run: Back away slowly while facing the bear.
  • Make Noise: Alert the bear to your presence by making noise.
  • Look Large: Try to make yourself appear as large as possible.
  • Bear Spray: Carry bear spray in an accessible area and know how to use it.
