Is it even April 1st if we don’t remind you of the greatest prank in Sitka history?

In 1974, Sitka woke up to an “erupting” Mt. Edgecumbe… panic spread, and a Coast Guard helicopter was sent to check it out.

What they found: 70 tires burning in the crater and next to it all, spray painted in the snow: APRIL FOOL.

The elaborate prank was the work of local Oliver “Porky” Bickar. He’d thought of it three years earlier, just waiting for the right April Fool’s morning with clear skies and enough visibility to see the volcano from town. With help from friends and a Petersburg helicopter pilot, mission was accomplished.
