The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans. Post 13 in Sitka Alaska was chartered on June 4th, 1920.

Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum is a nonprofit organization that supports the education and outreach programs of the Sheldon Jackson Museum. The Friends support the museum by assisting in purchasing new artifacts for the Museum’s permanent collection, a “hands-on” educational collection which educators all over Alaska can check out and use in their classrooms and serve as volunteer docents and greeters to assist visitors in the museum gallery.

The Sitka Volunteer Fire Department consists of approximately ninety volunteers and ten paid positions.  Operating within the department are three distinctly different divisions which include Fire, EMS, and Dive. The Sitka Volunteer Fire Department covers one of the largest City and Boroughs areas in the country (per square mile).

Sitka Maritime Heritage Society

We are a non-profit dedicated to preserving maritime heritage and sharing that legacy with the public especially youth. We are restoring a historic building as a maritime heritage center and working boat space. We put on classes, events, and programs aimed at celebrating and educating people on Sitka’s maritime history.

Sitka Trail Works, Inc. is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the development, maintenance, and promotion of Sitka area trails.  Occasional guided hikes, maps, volunteer trail maintenance, and special events are offered throughout the summer.

University of Alaska Southeast – Sitka Campus

UAS takes advantage of our location in Southeast Alaska’s Tongass National Forest for study in the sciences and humanities. UAS offers both online and on-campus programs in the sciences, including marine biology, English, social science, liberal arts, business, education, construction, power technology, fisheries, maritime training, health sciences, and more.

US Forest Service – Sitka Ranger District

Situated on the outer coast of the Gulf of Alaska, the Sitka Ranger District encompasses Baranof Island and part of Chichagof Island. The road system provides access to numerous miles of hiking trails, while access to the outer coast provides great opportunities for backcountry hiking, camping, dry cabins, whale watching and fishing. The Mount Edgecumbe Volcanic Field is another unique feature found on this district.
